WellBeings

Osteopathy and Sports Massage

Why choose WellBeings?

Not only treated my pain, but helped me to keep it away... with WellBeings I finally felt heard. I was given ways to manage my pain outside of clinic, rather than relying on adjustments alone. I couldn’t recommend them enough. I’m now pain free 95% of the time, and still book in for health check appointments, these days through choice rather than necessity. Great location. Lovely team. Fantastic Service..”

— Amy, 33

“I first visited with persistent chronic shoulder and back pain. She immediately identified problems with my posture that were exacerbating this and started correcting it through massage/manipulation and setting my own exercises to do at home. Amazing difference a few months on. I am able to enjoy my workouts pain free for the first time in a long while..

What’s involved in an appointment?

Knee Model Osteopath WellBeings Alderley Park

We start by taking a full medical history so we can fully understand your body and your health needs. Then we move on to physical assessment which may include neurological testing (e.g. reflexes), blood pressure and other relevant special tests. After diagnosis, we will discuss our treatment plan with you. The patient experience is at the heart of what we do. Our priority is making you feel safe and comfortable.

Movement is an important part of the consultation so please wear clothes you feel comfortable in e.g. gym kit. Please avoid wearing jeans, belts, skirts or dresses. You will be given private space to change if required.

Babies and children

Our osteopaths treat children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers. It is common for babies to experience unsettled periods during their first months of life, leading to feeding difficulties, trapped wind, reflux, constipation, and physical tension or discomfort. As your child progresses through growth stages and becomes more active, they may encounter various physical stressors and strains that could potentially result in injury. Our osteopaths carefully monitor your child's growth milestones, promoting the healthy development of joints, muscles, ligaments, and the nervous system.

We help your body heal itself

Treatment involves a range of techniques to encourage and improve quality and range of movement and promote healing within the body.

This may include stretching, massage and physical manipulation to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms.

We will also provide specialist advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

After your treatment

Immediately after your treatment keep well hydrated, and avoid strenuous exercise. It is common to feel a little sore or stiff the day following treatment, especially if this is your first experience of hands-on therapy. This feeling, often similar to post-exercise soreness, typically lasts around 48 hours. Get in touch if you have any concerns.

FAQs

  • Osteopaths are healthcare professionals who diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. They use manual techniques to improve the function of the body's structure, including the joints, muscles, and ligaments, to promote overall health and wellbeing.

  • Sports massage is designed to enhance athletic performance, aid recovery, and prevent injuries by targeting deep muscle tension, improving circulation, and increasing flexibility. Unlike relaxation or therapeutic massage, sports massage focuses on specific muscle groups affected by training and movement patterns, using techniques like deep tissue work, stretching, and myofascial release to optimize muscle function and reduce the risk of injury. Sports massage is ideal whether you're recovering from intense training, preparing for an event, or managing chronic tightness.

  • Both osteopaths and physiotherapists are equally qualified and trained (both obtaining degrees in their specialisation, and being regulated healthcare professionals), and they have more similarities than differences. They both work with the aim of enabling the body to most effectively heal. The best way to decide which one is best for you is to consider the type of problem you have, your personal preferences, and what may have helped you in the past.

  • To find a qualified osteopath in the UK, you can visit the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) website. The GOsC is the regulatory body for osteopathy in the UK and maintains a register of all qualified osteopaths in the country. Both Connie Wakeman and Lily Prestwood are registered with GOsC.

  • Osteopaths commonly treat a variety of conditions, including back pain, neck pain, joint problems, including hip and knee pain, sports injuries, headaches, and conditions related to posture. They can also provide advice on lifestyle and exercises to promote better whole-body health.

  • No, you do not need a referral from a GP to see an osteopath in the UK. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners, and you can make an appointment directly with them. However, some private health insurance policies may require a GP referral for reimbursement, so it's advisable to check your policy if you plan to claim expenses.

  • Osteopathic treatments are generally not covered by the NHS, although many local health authorities are now incorporating osteopathy into their physiotherapy and spinal rehabilitation units. Osteopathy is considered a complementary therapy, and patients usually pay for private treatment. Some private health insurance plans may cover osteopathic treatment, so it's advisable to check your policy for coverage details.

  • Babies’ skeletons are softer than an adult’s and osteopaths therefore only use gentler techniques such as cranial osteopathy when treating babies. All treatments are led by the baby and every effort is made to ensure they are calm and comfortable, including providing space for feeding and changing.
